 Oil FIlters for Highway Use

OK, it's my opinion to stick with OEM filters for my tractor. Does anyone have some resources as to the best oil filters for trucks/cars? I hear good & bad re: Fram, but they have so many different filters, and I am sure they manufacture some of the OEM filters. Thoughts, comments, suggestions? (I'm driving a Dodge Ram with a Hemi)

 Oil FIlters for Highway Use

I have done a lot of research on this over the years for industrial and racing engines.

My favorite filters are WIX brand. They are much higher quality than Fram. If they have your model, Sears carries WIX. Parts+ also will carry WIX. NAPA filters are mostly made by WIX and so I use them on all my engines.(Use the NAPA Gold grade of filters) They even have the right filter for my TC45 tractor. I am convinced that the WIX is better, so I put it on my tractor rather than the Denso filter that the dealer sells. One other interesting point is that WIX will make a larger filter that will fit my tractor, so instead of using the dinky 3.5" tall filter, there is a 5" tall one available with all the same specs only more filter area.

Purolator seems to make good filters, but they also seem to be almost impossible to find for me locally. I never use any other house labeled filters or discount brands. I expect that AC/Ford/Mopar filters are OK and meet OEM requirements. I just think that the WIX/NAPA goes beyond OEM.

The difference is in the quality of construction, amount of filter media used in square inches packed into the housing, and the bypass valve. If you use a filter with larger media area, then there is less need for the bypass valve in the first place.

I also recommend using 5-40 Rotella T Synthetic oil. It is designed for diesels but is good in everything. It has more lubricant qualities than the S rated oils. The 5-40 is also better for cold weather starting and will build up less back pressure when cold so that the filter does not need to open the bypass valve.

AC, as I have the TC45D, what filter is it that you use for your Boomer? Mine is due for an oil change soon. And, thanks for the info...I had a Fram filter on my Dodge last time, and I run Mobil 1 in it. The responses I got from others worried me a bit on the use of Fram.

I will look up the filter number and get back to you on this thread. Mobil 1 is good oil in gasoline engines. I have just found that the Rotella T Synthetic is better and I can use it in my diesels, gasoline vehicles, race car and even my motorcycles.

Motorcycles are probably the worst, because they run the engine oil in the transmission as well. Mobil 1 does not hold up in this service and Rotella T does. Since it works better there, and is no more expensive, I use it in everything. I have never had an oil related engine failure.

Delvac oil is also good.

I use the NAPA Gold 1056 oil filter. WIX filter number is 51056, so I am pretty sure that this filter is of WIX manufacture. This is a very high quality filter. It will fit most of the New Holland TC series from what I remember.

My philosopy on oil filters and oil is to use the best available.
